Artist Statement
As an artist living in the breath-taking landscapes of New Zealand, my creative journey began with community based night school lessons in basketmaking. Initially producing utilitarian baskets for everyday use then later the transformation of simple materials into contemporary works of art. Guided by an innate sense of sustainability my use of recycled copper, willow rattan, and using natural materials harvested from my immediate surroundings, such as jasmine, harakeke, and supplejack gave me inspiration to be more creative.
Drawing upon the timeless art of basket making, I weave intricate elegant pieces transcending the boundaries of mere functionality. Using these ancient techniques are created sculptures both for interior adornment and the outdoor spaces. From ethereal lamps that cast a gentle glow to hinaki, quivers, and sails that evoke a sense of poetic movement. Each sculpture is a harmonious blend of form and technique. While my artistic journey began with the creation of utilitarian baskets fashioned from Palembang cane. My passion for sculpture emerged as a natural extension of my craft. It is within the realm of sculpture that I find boundless inspiration, with the interplay of form and function. Recycled copper, with its rich hues and qualities of malleability and strength, has become a catalyst for new artistic directions. This versatile medium has given me the freedom to construct works on a larger scale, seamlessly transitioning between indoor and outdoor situations. Nature, with its awe-inspiring forms has left an indelible imprint on my artistic expression. Having resided on stunning Great Barrier Island, for 20 years and having always lived near the coast the land and sea have had an important influence on my work. Yet, inspiration also lies within everyday objects, those ordinary artefacts that grace our everyday lives. From hinaki to seed fans, from sails to a myriad of other treasures, it is the inherent beauty of form, wherever it may be found, that inspires me. The interplay of texture within each piece and the ethereal spaces that emerge between the woven strands are the essence of my artistic vision. In this symphony of materials and techniques, I invite you to embark on a journey of discovery, where the natural world converges with the human touch, and where the spaces between the weavings hold secrets waiting to be unveiled. Step into my world, where artistry and nature intertwine, and let the beauty of form transport you to a realm of boundless inspiration. |
